Last spring Vanessa Warren, mother, educator and athlete, battled her way to the semi-finals on American Gladiators. This spring she is taking on the challenge of teen homelessness. Warren, the founder of the Colorado Springs Chapter of Moms in Motion is partnering with Urban Peak Colorado Springs to host the first annual Mominator 5K race on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10 at 7:30am at Bear Creek Park East.

Moms In Motion, a national fitness team for women that combines fun, fitness and philanthropy, has been featured in USA Today, Shape Magazine, Her Sports Magazine and a variety of radio, TV and newspapers. Moms In Motion draws women of all ages and abilities—from women who have recovered from life-threatening illness, to past athletes looking for a new challenge. It is also a way to address weight issues and simply make new friends.

Urban Peak Colorado Springs (UPCS) was incorporated in 2000 to provide support services for runaway and homeless youth in the Pikes Peak region. UPCS is unique because it is the only licensed agency in our region, and second in the state of Colorado, that exclusively provides services to homeless youth. UPCS provides safety, respect, and essential services in a supportive community setting. Young people are helped to overcome homelessness and other real life challenges, and empowered to become self-reliant adults.

In 2003, UPCS purchased property southeast of downtown Colorado Springs to allow for the expansion of programs. This facility (called THE Place) opened in December 2004, and serves as a 20-bed youth shelter/transitional housing, consolidated services site, and administrative office.

Warren adds, “Many of the reasons that women join our team are the same reasons that these kids end up at Urban Peak. Everyone needs some help sometimes. Having common goals and committed partners makes a huge difference between failure and success.”

Warren’s vision of philanthropy is taking on a life of its own with the Mominator 5K. Local businesses are teaming as sponsors and will provide a women’s oriented expo following the race, as well as prizes and raffles for race participants. The racecourse is comprised of several “mom themed” obstacles, including the “messy teenager’s room,”—where runners must navigate across a bridge without stepping on debris. Moms with the most children will get a slight starting advantage—and men will start 10 minutes behind the women.

Registration is $30 per person and includes a race t-shirt, finisher’s flower and awards. Registration entry forms are available at Colorado Running Company, 833 N. Tejon Street or visit www.active.com.

All race proceeds will benefit Urban Peak Colorado Springs. To register online: http://www.active.com
