Based on surface signifiers and the band’s laid-back, improvisational approach to songs, the casual observer might semi-accurately file Akron/Family under “freak folk,” but the Brooklyn ensemble also has a grander sensibility--fusing acoustic guitars, electronica, multiple-part harmonies, and lilting, surprisingly poppy choruses that recall an even trippier PET SOUNDS....
